Mobile phone operator Orange has cut down its charges on text messages which its customers send for the purpose of text message donations.
The company will pass on 90% of the donation amount between 15p and £10 to charities. Orange is following Vodafone and O2 in this move. Both the companies reduced their charges to the same level which Orange just did 6 months back.
However the network provider gives 100% of all text donation amounts to its own charities including Comic Relief, Sport Relief, Children in Need and the Royal British Legion's poppy appeal.
Many charitable associations are raising funds with the help of text donations. The method is a hit as it is hassle free and quick as it just requires donors to send a text message. But the catch is the network operators cut their charges and the full amount never reaches the charities. Many charitable trusts and associations are fighting the battle and want the mobile operators to charge no fees for such donations as the amount is for a good cause. They are planning to come up out with a league table which will set the amount that each operator would charge depending on the donation amount. With this the charities want to discourage donors from sending text donations if they use higher charging operators.
Orange says with its new percentage it wants the charitable organizations to get the maximum benefits and thus has reduced its charges.
